I caught my flight into Bangkok
without any major incident, and found Elle right as I was coming through
immigration. Surprisingly, even my bag made it to Bangkok! We caught a taxi to
our hotel which is pretty nice, especially for the price we are paying for it
($41/night, you can’t beat it!). We were totally stuck in USA time so we stayed
up until about 3:30 until we finally fell asleep. We got up about 7:30 and hit
the gym in the hotel which is actually really nice! After our work out we got
ready and hit the town. We shopped for 10 hours straight, we went to the
weekend market which is only open 2 days a week and it is massive! We spent a
few hours there and it was so so hot. After that we went to their luxury
shopping mall Siam Paragon. We got lunch there and it was so good! I had some
kind of Japanese raman with tempura and it was excellent. We went to another
mall in Siam and the MBK center but it was just so much of the same thing we
just cruised through it. We found some great deals on the street, and I got 2
super cute pairs of flats for under $20! I’m super excited about them. We
finally finished shopping and headed back to the hotel from the sky train
station (we grossly underestimated the distance and it turned out to be quite the
walk) but, along the way we passed a million massage places and they are all so
cheap so we decided to stop at one. We got a 30 minute head, neck, and shoulder
massage and it was so good! I felt so bad for the lady doing it though cause I
was literally dripping with sweat. We finally made it back to the hotel and I
have never been so tired in my life.
Today we
got up at 6:30 and hit the gym again. We got ready and headed out to the Old
City to see all the wats (temples). We caught the sky train and then took a
water taxi out to the wats. It was pretty cool, I don’t really know the history
behind any of it so it’s hard to appreciate but it was cool nonetheless. One of
the wats we went to, Wat Arun, had these crazy steep stairs you could climb to
the top. So naturally we did that and it was terrifying, literally straight up
and down. As we were leaving there were these women dressing people up in
traditional Thai outfits and taking pictures in front of the temple. It was
hysterical, and Elle humored me and we both got dressed up in these ridiculous
outfits and took pictures. Best 200 Baht I have spent yet! After that we got
back on the water taxi and headed to Kao San Road, which is a good street
shopping district. We had a little trouble finding it but we (Elle) figured it
out and we made it. We walked around, got lunch, sweat, shopped, and eventually
headed back to the hotel. We came back and got cleaned up and went out to get
another massage. We went to a different place this time and decided to go for
an hour massage. They took us upstairs where there were these little beds for
us and then gave us these ridiculous pants and shirt to wear. We were dying.
The massage was not my favorite, I was literally in pain the entire time. The
girl was doing this weird neck rub which was the equivalent of a carotid
massage and I was just waiting to vagal down and black out. Fortunately that
didn’t happen, but I’m sure it was close. After our massage we went to dinner
where I discovered mango and sticky rice dessert. So good! This restaurant was
down a side street and as we were walking home we saw a giant rat run into the
bushes, so of course we were disgusted and we were going on about how gross it
was when one literally almost ran over elle’s foot. We both started screaming
and full on sprinted out to the road, I have never been so disgusted in my
life. To make things worse, we even saw one more! I was beside myself. I didn’t
see the third one because I was too busy avoiding the jumping cockroaches but
Elle saw it and screamed and that was enough for me. So so gross. Tomorrow we
are heading out early to go to the floating market which is supposed to be the
“Venice of the Far East”, tomorrow night we are going to check out Thai boxing,
and then we are off to Phuket!
